About

The mission of the University, as defined in the Strategy for Development of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn for 2010-2020, aims at the development of creative thinking, scientific research and teaching with respect for traditional academic values of humanism, tolerance, freedom, the search for truth and respect for ethical standards. Research of academics and students is subordinated to action for the common good, concern for the reputation of the university, to promote and perpetuate the cultural local, European and global heritage. An important objective of the University entered into its mission is to spread the culture understood by the academic community, students and alumni.

Studying Law focuses in the areas of student internships, lectures and open meetings, expert work, thesis topics adapt to the needs of external stakeholders. Solutions adopted by the Faculty meet the challenges and requirements set today for universities.

Courses Taught during law studies are closely linked with the needs of a global labor market. The attractiveness stems from its universality, that translates into future employment opportunities and to adapt the curriculum to the changing reality by introducing a range of subjects from the wider European law. The purpose of education is to acquire nearly the student’s knowledge of the dogmatic disciplines of Polish law, knowledge of the system of European and international law, profound knowledge of the elements of European legal culture, knowledge about the mechanisms of these systems and the relationship to the environment law.

An important place is to familiarize students with the principles of ethics, shaping the attitudes of active participation in society, education, interpersonal skills, including communication allowing to perform in the future as a mediator, sensitivity to problems arising in the practice of law. Objective referred to above, is implemented through the mandatory exchange items and specialization subjects and elective.

Education is integral to personal development of students: developing their cognitive skills, logical thinking and formulating accurate assessments. Studies should motivate you to extend the scope of their cognitive and social interests, and develop a taste for self-improvement.

A graduate of the Law obtains a Master’s degree. Graduation is prepare for work in the administration of justice, law firms, business entities, public sector and government, local government and state institutions.

 

THE PROFILE OF A CANDIDATE FOR MASTER OF LAWS  DEGREE (LEGUM MAGISTER, LL.M.)

European legal studies is a five-year programme leading to a Master of Laws degree (LL.M). The study programs offers a thorough education which meets national and international (European) standards, therefore this proposal is addressed to all candidates: Polish and Foreigners.

The course of studies not only consists of mandatory subjects, which are the core of legal studies (for example: administrative law and administrative procedure, criminal law and criminal procedure, civil law and civil procedure, constitutional law), but also includes a number of optional subjects, allowing for specialization in such areas as: Insolvency Law, Tax Law, Environmental Law and Intellectual Property Law.

The program of the studies is a combination of all core contents that allows graduates to have a profound knowledge of historical evolution and functioning of Polish legal order and basics of internal legal orders of European countries. The programme also provides an in-depth education in the European Union institutions, including law – making (for example: Law of European Union, European System of Justice, Issues of European Integration).

This Master’s programme (including many optional courses that correspond with the prospective occupational plans of the graduates) provides two methods of teaching: lectures and practical classes, which focus on the knowledge, developing writing, analytical and communicative skills. The graduates will benefit from the extensive experience and expertise of our academic staff.

The programme is primarily designed to provide thorough understanding of multi-level system of Polish and European Law. After completion of the programme, students receive a sound basis for an international legal career in all private and public institutions, including training in all legal professions, such as attorney or legal advisor in particular.

Master of Laws degree guarantees the recognition of qualifications in European countries and after fulfilling conditions specified by internal laws (for example special training in judicial service), it gives access to the bar within the European Union .

All lectures and classes of the course are in English. It will make the students become familiar with specific vocabulary used in legal sciences. Graduates with Faculty of Law degree and with additional fluent legal English are recognized as highly qualified lawyers with great job opportunities. Knowledge of English language is one of the basic requirements during application process.

The studies at the Faculty of Law in Olsztyn also enable an active participation in Erasmus program based on student mobility and university cooperation within European Union.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR LEGAL STUDIES

Graduates are prepared to take various kinds of applications required for the performance of legal profession, as well as to the function in all institutions and public and private organizations that require legal knowledge. Graduate knows how to communicate interpersonally, communicate in legal decision-making process. He also knows how to act as a negotiator or mediator in order to settle disputes. Graduate is prepared to perform all legal professions in Poland and other EU countries.

 

After graduating with a degree in Legal Studies the graduate:

  1. has expanded and in-depth knowledge of the nature of law, their place in the system of science and its relations to other sciences, knowns methods and tools, including data collection techniques appropriate to the legal science, research methods used in legal sciences;
  2. knows and understands the concepts and principles of intellectual property law, and understands the need for adequate protection of intellectual property;
  3. has a basic knowledge of human subjectivity social structures;
  4. has knowledge of the basic principles of institutional functioning of the social fabric of the country and the institutional relationships between these structures ;
  5. has knowledge of the basic principles of institutional functioning of transnational social structures and institutional links between these and between them and the state structures;
  6. has detailed knowledge of views on national and international structures and selected social institutions, as well as knowledge is aware of the views on the types of non-institutional social ties within these structures and institutions;
  7. has detailed knowledge of the historical evolution of views on the state structures , international and selected social institutions (in particular, knowledge of the views of the structures of domination and power) and their possible impacts on the transformation of understanding of legal principles and rules that organize the structure of national and international;
  8. has knowledge of the events fugitive sources for transformation of state structures and international causes of these events, their course, the scale and consequences of political, social and economic impacts and the actual effects on the transformation of legal principles and rules that organize the structure of national and international;
  9. has knowledge of the principles and rules of moral, their role and importance in the social structures and institutions, the sources, nature, and transformations;
  10. has knowledge of the views on the nature, content, function , sources and changes in the understanding of the principles and moral rules;
  11. knowledge and understanding of economic processes, the creation and development of forms of individual entrepreneurship;
  12. has in-depth knowledge of the views of the origins of the law, and changes in the understanding of the law and its taxonomy;
  13. has expanded and in-depth knowledge of general legal disciplines, including known in the broader concepts of these disciplines;
  14. has in-depth knowledge of the system of power in Poland, with different branches of government with particular reference to the legislative and judicial practice and certain aspects of their operation, and has in-depth knowledge about the sources of Polish law, the regulation of its changes and development;
  15. knows in depth the kinds of relationships intrasystemic in the Polish legal system and the relationship of this system with European Union law and the system of international law;
  16. knows and understands the terminology specific to each discipline of law;
  17. knows the rules of legal liability for illegal activities and an understanding of the specifics of this responsibility;
  18. has in-depth knowledge of the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a democratic state of law and the principles of the legal protection of citizens;
  19. has expanded and in-depth knowledge of the institutions, administrative law and tax law (substantive administrative law and procedure and the appropriate tax law and tax procedure);
  20. has expanded and in-depth knowledge of the institutions of private law (civil law, civil procedure law);
  21. has expanded and in-depth knowledge of the institutions of labor law;
  22. has expanded and in-depth knowledge of the institutions of the criminal law (criminal law, criminal procedure, criminal law implementing law offenses);
  23. has expanded and in-depth knowledge of the principles of financial law and the financial management of state and local governments;
  24. has expanded and in-depth knowledge of the system of European law and international law, including the elected institutions of the systems.

 

After graduating with a degree in Legal Studies the graduate:

  1. can properly use legal language;
  2. properly apply institutions in the field of specific areas of law;
  3. is able to correctly interpret the legal text and accurately explain the important relationship between the elements of the process of national law as well as intersystem system;
  4. can independently solve legal problems;
  5. is able to self- analyze the causes and course of the changes in the law and regulations critically analyze selected using the research methods used in legal sciences;
  6. is able to predict changes in the law, using their knowledge;
  7. is able to make basic in law and practice documents, including pleadings, legal opinions;

  9. recognizes and is able to refer to the legal relationship between phenomena and economic phenomena, political, social and cultural.

 

After graduating with a degree in Legal Studies the graduate:

  1. is aware of the scope of knowledge and acquired skills and an understanding of their limitations as well as resulting from the need to learn throughout their lives, develop and deepen the knowledge and skills acquired and broadening professional interests;
  2. is open to a variety of problems whose solution requires independence of thought involving the acquired knowledge and skills and is able to creatively search for optimal solutions to these problems and is ready to take on new work experience;
  3. understands the need for ethical standards in their professional and public activities;
  4. is knowledgeable in the field of cooperation, including communication, reasoning and organization of work in a diverse social environment, while maintaining openness to the views of others.
